What is Mathematica?

Mathematica is the world's most powerful global computing environment. Ideal for use in engineering, mathematics, finance, physics, chemistry, biology, and a wide range of other fields, it makes possible a new level of automation in algorithmic computation, interactive manipulation, and dynamic presentation--as well as a whole new way of interacting with the world of data.

Getting Mathematica...

... for your Department

Several departments on campus already contribute to the Mathematica site license. If you are in one of the following departments, contact your system administrator about getting Mathematica installed:

  • Math
  • Physics
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Computer Aided Engineering Labs
  • Mechanical Engineering - Engineering Mechanics
  • Geological/Mining Engineering & Sciences
  • Civil & Environmental Engineering

If you want Mathematica to be available in your labs and to your whole department, you will need to negotiate with the Mathlab Director, Rachel Robertson malabdir@mtu.edu, to get added to the list.

... for your office machine

If you are in one of the above Departments, contact your system administrator about getting Mathematica installed on your office machine.

If you are not in one of the above Departments, contact the Mathlab Director, Rachel Robertson malabdir@mtu.edu. Quite often, she'll allow individuals to have Mathematica installed on their machine without charge, but if it starts getting widespread in a Department she'll request that the Department help support the cost of the site license. Let the Mathlab Director know the name of your system administrator so we can get them access to the Mathematica media and information on installing and registering Mathematica on your machine.

... for home use

There are different procedures for faculty and staff home use versus student home use.

Student Home Use

Mathematica for Students is available for Windows, MacOS X, and Linux. Michigan Tech students can download the software for free using their MTU ISO password from the Mathlab Website.

Faculty/Staff Home Use

MTU Faculty and Staff can get Mathematica for home use by filling out the Home Use Mathematica License Request Form. You can chose to download the Mathematica software, or have a copy mailed to you.
