Remote Access

Remote Email Access

Check out HuskyMail, MTU's web based email service. If you want to know how to set up an email client for accessing your email remotely, check the MTU Email Info page.

Remote File Access

If you need remote access to your files and have access to a secure file transfer program, you can access your files from the following servers:

Computer Science
Status Server
Faculty
Grads
tamarack.cs.mtu.edu
Undergrads wopr.csl.mtu.edu

Math
Status Server
Faculty login.math.mtu.edu
Grads
Undergrads
login.mathlab.mtu.edu

Physics
Status Server
Faculty
Grads
phy.mtu.edu
Undergrads phylab.mtu.edu

If you use a Windows machine, you only have remote access to the files you save on the H: drive.

Remote Computer Access

Remote computer access is only available on unix based machines (Linux/Solaris). It is not available for Windows machines.

In order to get remote access you will need a secure shell client (ssh, PUTTY, etc...). It is recommended that you list the appropriate login server listed above in the Remote File Access section. Faculty and grad students may be able to connect to the computer in their office.

If you are trying to run a program remotely which has a graphical display, you will need to be connecting from a machine that has an X server running on it.

Guest Access

To get temporary wireless access for a visitor, you will need to send an email to cechelp@mtu.edu letting us know you have a visitor coming. When they get here, they will need to come to the CEC with identification (a driver's license, travel/student visa, or a passport) and a local phone number. Guest accounts can be granted for up to 1 year.

File Recovery

Depending on how recent you want the backup from, you may be able to recover the file yourself if you are using Linux or Solaris. Check out the Backups page for information on what is backed up, how to recover it yourself if possible, and what information needs to be emailed to cechelp@mtu.edu if you can't recover it yourself.
